Urvashi Vaid

The only information I knew about the presentation before going to it was the email that was sent out to us explainaing the oppurtunity we had to see the presenation. So I knew Urvashi Vaid was going to talk about LGBT, but I thought it was only going to be about same-sex marriage and the debate that is all around it.  From the presenation I learned that on average homosexuals are lower in income then those who are heterosexual. I always made the assumption that those who were homosexual were smarter and were living in a comfortable lifestyle when it came to finances anyways.  The information was presented very well and it was interesting so it was easy to stay engaged.  Clearly Urvashi Vaid has the authority to present on this topic because she has been involved with the LGBT community for 30 years and is a well known laywer for the LGBT population.

Google

During the google excerise, I didn't know how to access google scholar before it.   I also didn't know about the plus and minus you can add in your search instead of the word and or to not include  the search from searching for other things.  This will help me in this class when searching for my semester long research project about Down Syndrome, and to look for different articles for the alternative viewpoints paper, and possibly to find better articles to use.  This will help in other classes when I'm trying to get background information on certain things, I will know how to better find results that will be useful for me.  In a real life situation, I will also know if the information I find will be as reliable versus when I did a more broad search and didn't use the special tools.

So far for research

So, so far in my research poject, I can comfortably answer 3 out of the 8 questions.  I have identified a population, I have assumpions about them, and I have generated a question I want to know about the.  After looking at the quastions more though, I'm not sure what challenege they face I want to focus on the most.  I'm mostly interested in the early stages of life of children with Down Syndrome simply because I feel like most children, that's when the most effect of things happen, like speech, life long health, and healthy relatioships with others.

Blogging about blogs

I've been looking over some blogs to help me decide if blogs are a good resource to use or not for the semester long research project, and the ones i've come across so far are great to read, but won't help me much with my research. The particular one I'm talking about deals with a mother who writes about her son having Down SYndrome.  It's enjoyable to read, and it's great to see all the joys she is experiencing with her son, but she doesn't talk about the different medicines he may be taking, or the complications she may have had with him when he was first born.  http://amumslife-withtrisomy21.blogspot.com/
